We move more frequently than anywhere else in the UK

Author: Antony Gibson

Homeowners in the South East move more often than anywhere else in the UK, according to research commissioned by MyHomeMove.

The Land Registry data shows that properties are owned for an average of 16 years in the South East, which is six years less than in 2010. Not far behind, in London and the South West the average length is now 17 years.

Homeowners in the North East hold onto their property for the longest, selling after 22 years on average – which is 36% longer between sales than in the South East.

This research confirms that the average duration of homeownership has decreased in every region since the core of the recession in 2010.

People tend to move more often

“As well as demonstrating a recovery from the recession I believe this data shows how our lifestyles have changed” comments Antony Gibson, Residential Sales Director at Romans. “In general, we no longer anticipate a ‘job for life’ so people tend to move more often during their lifetimes due to work commitments.

“In the South East I also notice a lot of families move around in order to live in specific school catchment areas, in some cases this could result in two to three moves over a 12 year period as their children go through primary, junior and secondary schools.

“We speak to many clients who are simply moving because their current home doesn’t suit their needs anymore. This could be because there aren’t enough bathrooms, there is no off-road parking, or they’re looking for a more modern home with open plan living space.”

Everyone’s move is personal, so in order to help you find your dream home, no matter what you’re looking for, Romans has launched a Home Finder Service, giving you the unique opportunity to access properties before anyone else.
